Chris Paul is widely regarded as the best point guard in the NBA. Rajon Rondo is quickly climbing the laddder into that class. After watching last night's game, it's clear a rivalry already exists (see video). Let's take a look at how they stack up:
Size
Rondo: 23, 6-1, 175lbs
Paul: 24, 6-0, 170lbs
Skills
Rondo: Lightning quick, able to penetrate and finish, superior passing skills, great ball fakes, excellent defender and rebounder
Paul: Very fast, does most of his damage off pick-and-rolls, superior passing skills, 3-point range, league leader in steals, excellent rebounder
Weaknesses:
Rondo: poor jump shooter and free throw shooter, gambles frequently on defense, maturity
Paul: small stature limits effectiveness of his perimeter defense
Salary
Rondo is about to sign a 5-year, $55 million extension.
Paul is in the first year of a 4-year, $68 million max deal.
Achievements
Rondo: helped guide the Celtics to 2008 NBA championship. Gained national attention by averaging near triple-double in 2009 playoff series with Chicago.
Paul: Led Hornets to 57 wins in 2007-08. Lost to Spurs in conference semifinals in 7 games.
Summary:
While Paul is the more polished and complete offensive player, Rondo is slowing rounding his offensive game into shape. He may never be the threat Paul is, but he will be a weapon.
Defensively, Rondo has the physical tools (quickness, long arms) to be the game's best. Paul will always rack up the steals, but he will eventually trail Rondo is this category.
Outlook:
Rondo is learning the game with three future HOFers. He's also gained valuable playoff experience. When the Big 3 are ready to ride off into the sunset, Rondo will be ready to own this team.
Paul carries the burden of the Hornets on his shoulders. The team took a major step backwards last year, and with ownership complaining about tight finances, the Hornets may need to blow things up before they make another serious run. Not sure if Paul will have the patience to stick around.
Great job. I agree that right now Paul has the edge and I believe will always have better stats, but in the long run Rondo will have a much larger impact on the game. I hope Rondo stays in Boston his whole career. He is very special and he has not come close to reaching his ceiling as a player.
